If John (850 N), Betty (500 N), Robert (740 N), and Alice (710 N) all get in the elevator at once, can the elevator safely carry them up to the third floor? Answer:

Yes, the elevator will safely carry them up.

Explanation:

Upper limit for the elevator = 400kg = 4,000N

Net Force on the elevator due to the four persons = 850+500+740+710 = 2,800N

For the elevator to work safely the net force must be les than its upper limit.

2,800N < 4,000N

That is, the net force on elevator is less than its upper limit, hence, the elevator will safely carry them up to the third floor.
