ashoka is great ruler because

he had embraced buddhism and followed dharma

he had ruled one of the largest extending areas of maurya dynasty

he left violence and made his children named mahindra and sangamitra to spread buddhism

built many stupas rock edicts etc in which the famous is sanchi stupa
