Given:

Elect 1 out of 5

Male aged 40

Female aged 20

Male aged 32

Female aged 45

Male aged 30

To find:

The probability of selecting a representative that would be either male or over the age of 35.

Solution:

There is only one male who above 35 years of age.

Hence,

The possible outcome = 1

To select 1 from use,

By using combinations,

We get,

Select 1 from 5 = 5x! / ( 5 - 1 )!  * 1!

5 * 4 * 3 * 2 * 1 / 4! * 1!

Therefore,

Select 1 from 5 = 5

To find the probability,

Probability = Possible outcome / Select 1 from 5

1/5

Hence, The probability of selecting a representative that would be either male over the age of 35 is 1/5

"There is only one person whose age is > 35.

Possible Outcome(r)=1

One person from 5 so it can be done by 5C₁

C(n,r)=n! / (r!(n−r)!)

C(n,r)=C(5,1)

=5! / (1!(5−1)!)

= 5

∴Probability= Possible outcome/ 5C₁=1/5

∴The probability of selecting a representative that would be either male over the age of 35 is 1/5           "
