The energy required to rotate ethane molecule  about the carbon-carbon bond is called torsional energy.

  • There are different conformations (i.e. geometric arrangements) of carbon-containing species namely staggered, eclipsed, and gauche conformations.
  • In eclipsed conformation, the dihedral angle is 0° while in staggered conformation, the dihedral angle is 180°. There exists a torsional strain which is a barrier to the rotation between the two forms.
  • The energy required to overcome this barrier is called torsional energy.
