The envelope of air around the earth is called ATMOSPHERE.
Our Earth is covered by a blanket of Air which extends to a height of several hundred kms. This is called atmosphere. The force of gravity holds this atmosphere near the earth. The atmosphere is densest near the surface of the earth. As we go higher and higher atmosphere gets thinner and thinner.
Moon does not have atmosphere because it does not have enough gravitational force to hold the gases.
