The enzyme phosphofructokinase in the EMP pathway is feedback inhibited by ATP, which is

also a substrate for the phosphofructokinase reaction. Why doesn’t this situation render the

enzyme useless?​

The inhibition of phosphofructokinase by H+ prevents excessive formation of lactic acid (Section 16.1. 9) and a precipitous drop in blood pH (acidosis).

ATP is a natural allosteric inhibitor of PFK, in order to prevent unnecessary production of ATP through glycolysis. However, a mutation in Asp(543)Ala can result in ATP having a stronger inhibitory effect (due to increased binding to PFK's inhibitory allosteric binding site).
