x = 2cos²α-3 and

y = 3sin²α-4

y = 2sin²α + sin²α -4

Let x + y = 2cos²α - 3  + 2sin²α + sin²α - 4

x + y = 2 (cos²α  +sin²α) - 3 - 4 + sin²α

x + y = 2 - 3 - 4 + sin²α

x +y = sin²α - 5
