It can be split as below:

Now, the shaded part is seen as 6 equilateral triangles. Also, if we just consider a single big triangle (top/bottom one) as a whole, it has 9 small triangles where 6 triangles are shaded ones.

i.e., the shaded part is (6/9) of each triangle.

So, area of this shaded part is (6/9)* area of triangle = (6/9)* 27 = 18 sq. cm
