Given : A circuit of capacitance

To Find : The equivalent capacitance of the combination between point A and B is

Solution:

The given circuit can be compared to wheat stone bridge

where  10 /20  = 20/40  = 1/2

Hence balanced so capacitor 30 μF can be removed

so 10 and 20 μF are in series

20 and 40 μF are in series

and combination of both are in parallel

capacitor in series  1/C = 1/C₁  + 1/C₂

capacitor in parallel   C = C₁  + C₂

10 and 20 μF are in series  = 1/(1/10 + 1/20 )  =  20/3  μF

20 and 40 μF are in series  = 1/(1/20 + 1/40)  =  40/3  μF

20/3  μF and  40/3  μF in parallel

Hence The equivalent capacitance of the combination between point A and B is  =   20/3 + 40/3    =  60/3   = 20   μF
