Given that,

The equivalent capacity of two capacitor in series is 3 μF and in parallel is 16 μ F.

To find,

Their individual capacities.

Solution,

For series combination, equivalent capacitance is given by :

\dfrac{1}{C_s}=\dfrac{1}{C_1}+\dfrac{1}{C_2}

We have, C_s=3\ \mu F

So,

\dfrac{1}{3}=\dfrac{1}{C_1}+\dfrac{1}{C_2}\ ......(1)

For parallel combination, the equivalent capacitance is given by :

C_p=C_1+C_2

We have, C_p=16\ \mu F

So,

16=C_1+C_2\ .....(2)

We need to solve equation (1) and (2) to find the value of C₁ and C₂. If we solve them, we get :

C_1=4\ \mu F\\\\C_2=12\ \mu F

So, their individual capacities are 4 and 12 microfarads.
