Potential difference is the amount of work done in bringing a charged particle from a to b for the given points

If the resistors are connected in parallel then reciprocal of equivalent resistor will be equal to the sum of reciprocals of of individual resistors.

If the resistors are connected in series then the equivalent resistance will be equal to the sum of the individual resistors.
