The value of the resistance x is 1Ω.

The equivalent resistance of the given circuit is 4Ω.

We have to calculate the value of x.

Step 1 : Two resistors 5Ω and xΩ are joined in series.

∴ equivalent resistance of these two resistors, R₁ = (5 +  x)Ω

Step 2 : Two resistors 8Ω and 4Ω are also joined in series.

∴ equivalent resistance, R₂ = (8 + 4)Ω = 12Ω

Step 3 : We need to find the equivalent resistance between A and B, so the final equivalent resistance will be the parallel combination of R₁ and R₂.

R=\frac{R_1R_2}{R_1+R_2}

Given, the equivalent resistance of the given circuit , R = 4Ω

\therefore 4=\frac{(5+x)12}{(5+x)+12}\\\\\implies4(17+x)=60+12x\\\\\implies68+4x=60+12x\\\\\implies 8x=8\\\\\implies x=1

Therefore the value of resistance x is 1Ω.
