If there is a decrease in the side length by 1% , the side will be decreased from 1x to 0.99x, where x= side of the rectangle, the area will be

= 0.99x x0.99y= 0.9801 xy

So the decrease in the area will be= (1.00- 0.9801)= 0.0199. ie 1.99% .

If there is a increase in the side length by 1% , the side will be increased from 1x to 1.01, where x= side of the rectangle, the area will be

= 1.01 x 1.01= 1.0201, ie 2.01% .

So the error in the measurement of its area will be an average of 2% ,
