The story of the Indian national flag is not just about the invention of a national symbol by leaders sitting in the high offices. It was a symbol not just representing India but an India which was independent. Patriotism has colored the story of the Indian flag with many colors. With the advent of the freedom struggle, came the awareness for representing India not just through committees, groups and organizations but through a symbol, recognized nationally and internationally. It was a matter of pride and pure patriotism. A symbol which can manifest the idea of India free from British rule, a country of its own. The Satyagraha called for an unique style of battling the ruling Government.
22nd July, 1947 is a day to remember when in the constituent assembly the national flag was adopted from the former design introduced by Pingali Venkayaand. However, there have been various national flags that were used before and the evolution of it is quiet interesting to note.

Finally on July 22nd of 1947 the present flag of India was adopted from this flag. The spinning wheel was replaced by Ashoka’s chakra but the colors remained the same, bearing the same meanings: Saffron for strength, White for peace, Green for fertility and the Chakra for truth. Thus the tri-colour flag of the Congress Party eventually became the National Flag of India.
