Exoskeleton of arthropods is made up of Chitin and this chitin layer prevents the extra growth of organism....

so , during the growth stage , the arthropods undergo a process called MOULTING by which they remove this layer...

Generally the exoskeleton will have thickened areas in which the chitin is reinforced or stiffened by materials such as minerals or hardened proteins.
