Expansion of British Rule under Lord Wellesley ( 1798 –1805): The next large-scale expansion of British rule in India occurred during the Governor-Generalship of Lord Wellesley who came to India in 1798 at a time when the British were locked in a life-and- death struggle with France all over the world.

The expansion of British rule was easier on South India during the rule of lord Wellesley because in the Anglo-Maratha and Anglo-Mysore wars he defeated the strongest powers of India, the Maratha Empire and Tipu Sultan's Mysore kingdom. So when he fought Napoleon Bonaparte at Waterloo here was no Indian capable of defeating the British.
