Forests influence the quality of air, soil and water resources in the following ways —

1. Influence of forests on air Both plants and animals release carbon dioxide to the atmosphere as a product of respiration. Forests take up this carbon dioxide for the manufacture of their food and release oxygen to the atmosphere after photosynthesis. In this way they are helpful in cleaning the air.
2. Influence of forests on soil

(a) The deep-rooted plants of the forests are helpful in holding soil particles tightly. In this way forests help in reducing soil erosion.
(b) Forests are also a component of biogeochemical cycles, thus help in cycling of nutrients and returning them back to the soil, thus increasing the soil fertility.

3. Influence of forests on water: Forests lose water to the atmosphere through transpiration which is then converted into clouds, water vapours, etc. which are responsible for causing rain. Thus, forests help in increasing the water resources of the earth.
