Answer:
Jacques Marquette, a Catholic missionary, and Louis Joliet, a fur trader, were among eight explorers despatched by the governor of New France in 1673 on a quest to discover the Northwest Passage.
- The team set out from Quebec for Lake Michigan's northernmost point via the upper peninsula of Michigan.
- They paddled across the vast lake in canoes and arrived in Green Bay, Wisconsin, at the Fox River's mouth.
- The Native Indians whom they met gave them descriptions of the many rivers they would encounter.
On June 17, 1673, they entered the vast Mississippi River after portaging their canoes to the Wisconsin River.
