The extension of an elastic spring is found to vary directly with the weight suspended from it. If a weight of 75 kg produces an extension of 1.4 cm, calculate the weight that would produce an extension of 9.8 cm. 65

Let us consider the extension produced be ‘x’ cm

250/3.5 = 700/x

By cross-multiplying

250x = 700(3.5)

250x = 2450

x = 2450/250

= 9.8

∴ The extension produced is 9.8 cm for the weight of 700gm
