Answer:

Aluminum is ideal for aircraft production because it is light and strong. Aluminum weighs about a third of steel, which allows the aircraft to carry more weight and/or become more fuel efficient. In addition, the high corrosion resistance of aluminum ensures the safety of the aircraft and its passengers.

During World War II, aluminum was needed in many military applications, especially in airframe construction, which led to an increase in aluminum production.

Extra information:

The demand for aluminum was so great that in 1942, WOR-NYC broadcast the radio program "Aluminum for Defense" to encourage Americans to contribute scrap aluminum to the war effort. Aluminum recycling was promoted and “Tinfoil Drives” offered free movie tickets for aluminum foil bullets.

Between July 1940 and August 1945, the US produced a staggering 296,000 aircraft. More than half were made primarily of aluminum. The US aviation industry was able to meet the needs of both the American military and America's allies, including Britain. At its peak in 1944, American aircraft factories were producing 11 aircraft per hour.

By the end of the war, America had the most powerful air force in the world.
