Correct Question :-

The external dimensions of a wooden box, open at the top are 54 cm by 30 cm by 16 cm. It is made of wood 2 cm thick. Calculate :-

(i) the capacity of the box

(ii) the volume of wood.

Answer :-

  • Capacity of box = 18200cm³
  • Volume of wood = 7720cm³

Step-by-step explanation :-

To Find,

  • The capacity of the box
  • The volume of wood.

Solution,

  • The capacity of the box

As we know that,

Capacity of box = internal volume, therefore internal volume of the wooden box is,

» Internal length = 54 - ( 2 + 2 )

= 54 - 4

= 50cm ★

» Internal breadth = 30 - ( 2 + 2 )

= 30 - 4

= 26cm ★

» Internal height = 16 - 2

= 14cm ★

Therefore, internal volume is,

As we know that,

Volume of cuboid = ( l × b × h )

Where,

  • l = Length
  • b = Breadth
  • h = Height

» 50cm × 26cm × 14cm

» 1300cm² × 14cm

» 18200cm³

The capacity of wooden box is 18200cm³.

Now,

  • The volume of wood.

As we know that,

Volume of cuboidal wood = [ External volume - Internal volume ]

Therefore, the external volume is,

» 54cm × 30cm × 16cm

» 1620cm² × 16cm

» 25920cm³

The external volume of wood is 25920cm³.

Therefore, the volume of wood is,

» 25920cm³ - 18200cm³

» 7720cm³ ★

The volume of wood is 7720cm³.
