➡️ The density of an object determines whether it will float or sink in another substance. An object will float if it is less dense than the liquid it is placed in. An object will sink if it is more dense than the liquid it is placed in.

The factors that determines whether a substance floats or sinks in a liquid is DENSITY

But why?

  • Density is a physical quantity denoting the amount of mass present in an object per unit volume. In other words, density is calculated as (mass)/(volume).

  • Now, let's assume that an object is placed on a liquid. If the object has a higher density as compared to the liquid, the buoyant force experienced by the object is lesser than the weight of the object. Hence, the object sinks.

  • However, if the object has a lesser density as compared to the liquid the buoyant force is equal to the weight of the object and the object floats.
