The revolt of 1857 failed inspite of mass participation beacuse of the following reason---
1) The revolt broke out before the appointed date. It did not go according to the plan
2) There was no unity among the rulers. They were fighting for their own Territories and not for the country.
3) The revolt failed to spread. It was limited to north and central India. In north,the sikhs, Nizami's and scinidias did not join the revolt. The afghans and gurkhas remained loyal to the britishers.
4) Indian rulers were having lack of modern weapons and disciplined army as compared to british rulers.
5) The leader of the revolt was neither strong nor gave Directions to the revolt
