Pollution and dumping of untreated sewage and other wastes, from human settlements and houseboats, has resulted in shrinkage of the lake and deterioration of water quality.

The lake had an original area of 22 square kilometres, from which it has shrunk to 18 square kilometres. However, Dal Lake which is in Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir), continues to attract tourists and is important for Kashmir’s tourism and recreation.
