William Jennings Bryan was a former Democratic congressman from Nebraska. In the year 1896, he ran unsuccessfully for the post of the President of the United States.

W.J. Bryan was a staunch supporter of
bimetallism or "free silver", a solution for the economic turmoil caused by the Panic of 1893

He gave a resounding speech at the
Democratic National Convention in Chicago on July 9, 1896. He concluded his speech with the words "you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold".

Thus, this famous speech is known as "The Cross of Gold" speech.
