Answer:

The female butterfly lays eggs on the leaves of a plant.

Explanation:

The female butterflies usually lays eggs on tender young leaves, buds or on the stem of specific plants. Some butterflies may lay a single egg while others may lay in clusters, an average of 100 to 300 eggs are laid by a single butterfly. The eggs are attached to the plants firmly and don't fall off by wind or water because of a sticky substance produced with the eggs by the butterfly. The eggs are covered by a hard covering called chorion. A butterfly's eggs usually hatches after 3 to 8 days.

There are four stages in the life cycle or metamorphosis (physical development/change) of a butterfly. These stages are:-

1. Eggs

2. Larvae - After the eggs are hatched a Larvae, commonly know as a catterpillar, comes out of the eggs.

3. Pupa/chrysalis - The catterpillar futher secretes some fluids and develops into a chrysalis, commonly known as pupa, which hangs on tree branches and leaves in safe environments.

4. Adult/Butterfly - The larvae inside the pupa goes extreme physical changes and comes out developed into a full adult butterfly.
