6th Schedule provides for special arrangements for the administration of tribal areas of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram. It is somewhat different from the arrangements provided for the other tribal areas of the country, including Panchayati Raj. The existence of Autonomous District Councils with enhanced autonomy and powers to administer such areas is the key feature of this Schedule. At present there are Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council, Dima Hasao Autonomous District Council and Bodoland Territorial Area District in Assam, Garo Autonomous District Council, Khasi Autonomous District Council and Jaintia Autonomous District Council in Meghalaya, Tripura Tribal Autonomous District Counci in Tripura and Lai Autonomous District Council, Mara Autonomous District Council, and Chakma Autonomous District Council in Mizoram.
