'The Fight' is a story in class 8th English Supplementary reader It so happened written by 'Ruskin Bond'
The story commences during summer time and Ranji's school had not yet begun. He had no friends. On a very hot, tiring and scorching day, Ranji who had set out to discover through the hills found a pool in the forest. The water was very clean and one could see through it the pebbles which were at its bottom. And since it was summer time, the pool had only a thin inflow. But there was water still. He who had often gone swimming did not hesitate to jump into the pool. Ranji lived in Rajputana desert which was a thirsty town. The cold and clean water invited him. Next day, Ranji resting on a yellow rock besides the pool came across a rather hostile fellow, taller, thicker and more physically stronger than him. They both struck in ego hassles proclaimed to be warriors and fighters. The stranger assuming a violent behavior beat Ranji hard on his cheek. His assailant, Ranji too stood up. Both started groping each other's head and throat which followed by a frenzied struggle. Both were eager to fight, emerge victorious; so much so that they decided to continue their fight the following day too.

Both Soapy and his adversary exchanged a cold eye and the next day, both saw each other across different lengths of the pool: no matter how much exhausted they might have been, Ranji dived into the pool to reach at the other end which really surprised his competitor and Ranji taught him to do so. Similarly, Ranji taught him how to swim under water too. Ranji and Suraj bargained each other. Suraj promised to make Ranji a Pehlwan while Ranji told that he would teach him different swimming skills. The worst of enemies now had become the best of friends.
