Complete question:

Figure shows a ray of light passing through a prism. If the refracted ray QR is parallel to the base BC, show that (i) r₁ = r₂ = A/2 and (ii) angle of minimum deviation, Dm = 2i - A

Solution:

(i)  If the refracted ray QR is parallel to the base BC, then i = e

r₁ = r₂ = r

We know that,

r₁ + r₂ = A

r + r = A

2r = A

r = A/2

Therefore, r₁ = r₂ = A/2

Hence proved.

(ii) A + D = i + e

Since i = e, so D = Dm

A + Dm = i + i

A + Dm = 2i

Dm = 2i - A

Hence proved.
