The figure shows a situation when jaws of vernierare touching each other. One main scale division is of 1 mm.

We have to find the zero correction in reading.

zero correction/ error either be positive or be negative.

  • if the zero of Vernier scale is the right of that of main scale, zero error will be negative.
  • and I'd the zero of Vernier scale is the left of that of main scale, zero error will be positive.

now after knowing the sign of zero error, we should find the zero error which is determined by, Zero error = V.S.D × L.C

where V.S.D = Vernier scale division and L.C is least count.

here you see, the zero of Vernier scale is the right of that of main scale.

∴ zero error will be negative.

you can also see that, 7th division of Vernier scale is coincide with main scale.

so, V.S.D = 7

and least count = main scale division /no of divisions in Vernier scale

= 1mm/10 = 0.1 mm

now, zero error = - 7 × 0.1 mm = -0.7 mm

Therefore the zero correction in reading measured will be -0.7 mm. so the correct option is (4)
