Given : The fine schedule for overdue books at the county library is modeled by the values in the table.

To find :  Which equation best models the fine schedule for overdue books

Solution:

Days Over dues    Fine

0                            0 ¢

2                            5 ¢

4                           10 ¢

6                            15 ¢

8                            20 ¢

y = mx  + c

=> 0 = 0 +  c

=> c = 0

=> y = mx

=> 5 = m(2)

=> m = 5/2

=> y = 5x /2

Lets check all other

x = 4  => y = 5 * 4 /2 = 10

x = 6 => y = 5 * 6 /2 = 15

x = 8  => y = 5 * 8 / 2 = 20

hence y = 5x

y = fine

x = Days over due

Hence correct statement is

y = five-halves x, where y is the cost in cents for a book that is x days overdue
