The earliest of the birds were derived from a clade of theropods (dinosaurs) named Paraves. For longest time, the small theropod dinosaur Archaeopteryx lithographica from the Late Jurassic period was considered as the earliest bird. Not much else is known for facts and this is called the geological timeline and the evolution of birds.

Birds evolved from theropod dino- saurs during the Jurassic (around 165–150 million years ago) and their classic small, lightweight, feathered, and winged body plan was pieced together gradually over tens of millions of years of evolution rather than in one burst of innovation.
