Even a brief glance at modern history suggests that there is an important

connection between popular sovereignty and the rise and spread of national-

ism. For wherever popular sovereignty leads, nationalism seems to follow.

Almosteverygreatlandmarkinthehistoryofpopularsovereignty—fromthe

Glorious Revolution in 1688, the North and South American wars of inde-

pendence, the great French Revolution of 1789, and the “springtime of peo-

ples” in 1848 to the collapse of the European, colonial empires and Soviet

empires in the twentieth century—looms large in the history of nationalism

as well.

This is an important one

French revolution of 1789 was the first clear expression of nationalism.

1. Ideas of Le patric and Le lityon emphasised the nation of United community enjoying equal rights under the constitution.

2. Estates general was elected and renamed national assembly.

3. New French flag tricolor was chosen to replace the former Royal standard.

4. A centralised system was put in place and formulated the uniform laws for all the citizens within the territory.

4. Internal custom duties and dues was abolished and uniform system of weights and measures were adopted.

4. Regional dialect were discouraged and French as it was spoken and written in Paris became the national language of the nation.

Thanks

Hope it helps you
