The National Committee on Women's Education was set up by the Government in May 1958. Shrimati Durgabai Deshmukh was its Chairman. The Committee recommended that priority should be given to the establishment of parity between the education of boys and girls. According to it, there should be co-education up to the middle school stage. At the high school stage there should be separate institutions for girls where a more diversified curriculum suitable for girls should be introduced. Provision for creches, school mothers, employment facilities for adult women and training of women teachers were also mentioned by the Committee. It also suggested provision for scholarships for girls.
