The first green corridor in India was created in 2016.
Features of Green Corridor in India:
- The first green corridor was created on the Manamadurai-Rameswaram stretch of the Southern Railway in the state of Tamil Nadu.
- It is 114 km long.
- The trains running on this stretch have bio-toilets to keep the stretch between the two stations clean.
Working of bio-toilets:
- A regenerative type anaerobic bacteria in liquid form is poured into the retention tanks in the bio-toilets which helps disintegrate human waste into liquid and gas.
- The liquid produced will be chlorinated and discharged into the environment. This liquid will cause no harm to the environment.
The Indian Railways developed the concept of bio-toilets in collaboration between Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
