The first green corridor in India was created in 2016.

Features of Green Corridor in India:

  1. The first green corridor was created on the Manamadurai-Rameswaram stretch of the Southern Railway in the state of Tamil Nadu.
  2. It is 114 km long.
  3. The trains running on this stretch have bio-toilets to keep the stretch between the two stations clean.

Working of bio-toilets:

  1. A regenerative type anaerobic bacteria in liquid form is poured into the retention tanks in the bio-toilets which helps disintegrate human waste into liquid and gas.
  2. The liquid produced will be chlorinated and discharged into the environment. This liquid will cause no harm to the environment.

The Indian Railways developed the concept of bio-toilets in collaboration between Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
