The first Indian cloth mill was set up in 1818 and it was The Bowreah Cotton Mill in Kolkata and second mill was Fort Gloster (in 1930) in Kolkata, but these mills were owned by the Englishmen and not the natives. Gradually, Indian capital entrenched itself into this industry and Bombay and Ahmedabad sprouted as the great centers of this industry. C. N. Davar, a Parsee entrepreneur, promoted the first cotton mill in Bombay in 1851. The name of this mill was The Bombay Spinning and Weaving Company, which started working in 1854.
