The first three terms of a proportion are 3, 5 and 27 respectively. Then the fourth term is 45

Solution:

Given that the first three terms of a proportion are 3, 5 and 27 respectively

To find: fourth term

If a : b : : c : d or in other words a : b = c : d, then the quantity 'd' is called fourth proportional to a, b and c

When a : b : : c : d then we can say,

\frac{a}{b} = \frac{c}{d}

So the given first three terms are:

3 : 5 : : 27 : x

\frac{3}{5} = \frac{27}{x}\\\\3x = 27 \times 5\\\\x = 9 \times 5 = 45

Therefore the fourth term is 45
