Jodanang, a naga spiritual leader and freedom fighter of Manipur was the first tribal leader who was inspired by Gandhi and his ideology.

Jodanang first tried to unite the Nagas socially through Herakan Movement and then launched the political movement to free nagas from the clutches of British. He was aware about the freedom movement in mainland India under Gandhi. He was influnced by the Civil Disobedience Movement of Gandhi and thus started the Civil Disobedience Movement In Manipur. He ordered the people not to pay taxes and disobey the rules of the British government. He was later hanged by the British and now he is being regarded as the first martyr of Manipur.
