BCG stands for Bacillus Calmette-Guerin and this vaccine is to protect the baby from being prone to tuberculosis, and giving immunity against the same. Only a single dose is given to the baby as soon as possible after birth.


There are very few side effects associated with BCG. The baby may develop mild pain, swelling or redness at the area where the injection is given. However, these pass off very soon. In some cases, there may be a small scar at this site.
