The flat broader ‘part of the leaf’ is called as leaf blade or lamina. It is this part of the leaf which supports photosynthesis.

This is because it is the rich area in a leaf which has a number of veinlets. These veinlets support the leaf with water and mineral salts required for the photosynthesis. This is divided into the ‘adaxial surface’ and the ‘abaxial surface’.

The adaxial surface captures light for photosynthesis from the top side whereas the abaxial surface helps in the exchange of gases.
