The flow of energy is unidirectional because the energy that is captured by the autotrophs does not revert back to the Solar Input and the energy which passes to the herbivores does not come back to autotrops. Also as it moves through the various level it is no longer available to previous level.

1 The energy obtained from sun could not be given back by the producers.
2 Similarly the energy from the consumers do not come back to the producers.
3 This means that the flow of energy goes in 1 direction and does not come back to the previous level.
