Answer:

Soil erosion is the denudation of the upper layer of soil leading to soil degradation.  It is a natural process caused by the dynamic activity of erosive agents (i.e., air, water, ice, snow,  plants, and animals).

Following are the cause of soil erosion -

  • Agriculture Practice

Farming disturb the soil when natural trees in the forest are cut and the land is tilled to plant new seeds. Most of the soil is cleared in winter. Tractor tires create furrows in the ground, creating a natural path for water. Fine soil particles or dirt are carried away by the wind.

  • Grazing

Animals kills weeds and removes vegetation from the land and their hooves disturb the soil. They also uproot plants which loosens the soil and makes it more prone to erosion.

  • Labor and Mining

A lot of trees are cut for the logging process. Trees hold the land and protect the ground from heavy rainfall. The litter that protects the soil from erosion is also lost during logging. Mining activities change the land, making it more vulnerable to erosion.

  • Construction

Upgrading of roads and buildings exposes soil to erosion. Forests and meadows are cleared for construction purposes, leaving the soil exposed to erosion.

  • Rivers and Streams

Flowing rivers and streams carry soil particles with them, leading to established erosion activity.

  • Major Winds

In dry weather or in semi-arid regions, tiny soil particles are blown by the wind to distant lands. This degrades the soil and leads to desertification.
