Answer:
We celebrated the ‘International Day of Francophonie’ on Tuesday 20thMarch with an Assembly where we learnt about all the countries where French is spoken and discovered that it is the 5thmost spoken language in the world (after Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish and Arabic). A display was then put up outside the Library, where pupils and staff could add French words and phrases which we use in English, too. The prize for the most recherché phrases goes to Miss Weatherly!
A1 and Alpha also took up the challenge to learn some idiomatic similes and were interested to find that the French version of ‘as cunning as a fox’ is, in fact, ‘rusé comme un renard’, whereas ‘as thin as a stick’ in English would be ‘maigre comme un clou’in French (‘as thin as a nail’)! Next term, some of the girls will be continuing with the challenge to place the francophone countries in the correct place on the world map. A bonne journée was had by all!
