Fertilization in plants

Fertilization in plants in of double fertilization. It is the very characteristic feature of the angiosperms.

Double fertilization Triple fusion

  • Fertilization in angiosperms is known as double fertilization and triple fusion. Here there are two male gametes involved.
  • One of the male gametes fuses with the egg cell and forms the zygote. The other male gamete fuses with the central nuclei and forms a triploid PEN.
  • In the figure, the male gamete is at the end of the pollen tube entering the embryo sac through integuments- part labeled as 3 and the female gamete is in the embryo sac labeled as 5.

Hence, the double fertilization and the triple fusion results in a diploid zygote and a triploid endosperm. This is a specialized type of fertilization seen in angiospermic plants.
