Force and surface area are related

Explanation:

  • Force per unit area is defined as pressure.
  • In the first figure , we can see that books are distributed horizontally in a a uniform manner across the wooden plank . This results in more surface area occupied by the object ( books) and since area and pressure are inversely related, therefore , pressure exerted will be lesser.
  • In the second figure , force is exerted at a point since all objects are placed on a smaller surface area . This results in greater pressure exerted over the wooden plank and therefore the plank tends to bend down slightly due to more force exerted together by the books.
