C=O bond has the strongest infra-red (IR) absorption

Explanation:

  • A polar bond is said to IR active whereas a non-polar bond is usually IR inactive.
  • The C=O bond present in simple ketones,  aldehydes as well as carboxylic acids absorb around 1710 cm^-^1
  • IR region is said to be just below red color wavelength in the visible region.   The wavelength is usually between 2.5 - 25 um.
  • Conjugation of C=O with C=C lowers the  stretching frequency .
  • The C=O group of an amide group absorbs at a much lower frequency. However , the C=O for an ester molecule shows absorption at a higher frequency.
