6

Answer:

x = 4,. y = 5

Step-by-step explanation:

2, 3, x, y, 7, 9, 12, 14

median = 6

the number of terms are odd therefore the average of two middle terms y and 7 is 6

 \frac{y + 7}{2}  = 6 \\ y + 7 = 6 \times 2 \\ y + 7 = 12 \\ y = 12 - 7 \\ y = 5

mean of the data is 7

2, 3, x, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14

mean = sum of the observation / number of observations = 7

 \frac{2 + 3 + x + 5 + 7 + 9 + 12 + 14}{8}  = 7 \\  \frac{52 + x}{8}  = 7 \\ 52 + x = 7 \times 8 \\ x = 56 - 52 \\ x = 4

x = 4
