Value of x is 7.

Mean of data is 11.

Given:

  • Numbers arranged in ascending order.
  • 4, 7, x+1, x+5, 15, 20
  • Median is 10.

To find:

  • Find the value of x and hence mean.

Solution:

Concept/Formula to be used:

  • Median of even numbers: Average of middle two numbers.
  • Mean= \frac{\Sigma x}{n}  \\

Step 1:

Find the middle two numbers.

Total numbers are (n)=6

Middle two numbers are 3rd and 4th number.

Median =  \frac{\text{sum of middle numbers}}{2}  \\

or

10 =  \frac{x + 1 + x + 5}{2}  \\

or

2x + 6 = 20 \\

or

2x = 14 \\

or

 \bf \: x = 7 \\

Thus,

Value of x is 7.

Step 2:

Put the value of x in numbers.

Numbers are 4, 7, 8, 12, 15, 20

Mean =  \frac{4 + 7  + 8 + 12 + 15 + 20}{6}  \\

or

Mean =  \frac{66}{6}  \\

or

\bf Mean = 11 \\

Thus,

Mean is 11.
