The following questions consist of two statements-Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Answer these questions selecting the appropriate option given below:
questions selecting the appropriate option given below:
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.

(i) Assertion (A) : The particles of a suspension can be seen by naked eye.
Reason (R) : When a suspension is left undistributed, it becomes unstable.
(ii) Assertion (A) : A mixture of salt and camphor is separated by sublimation.
Reason (R) : Camphor is sublimable whereas salt is non-sublimable component.
iii) Assertion (A) : During a chemical change, no new substance is formed.
Reason (R) : Burning a candle involves both physical and chemical changes.

The appropriate options given below are :-

(i) (b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.

  • The particles of suspension are big enough to be visible from the naked eye. For eg:- Mixture of sand in water. Hence, assertion is true.
  • Suspensions are unstable of all mixtures because after sometime the particles settle at the bottom. Hence, Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.

(ii) (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

  • By the process of sublimation camphor can be separated from salt as camphor can be sublimed while salt is non-sublimable. Hence, Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

(iii) (d) A is false but R is true.

  • Chemical changes are always accompanied by formation of new substance as these changes cannot be reversed and there's a change in whole chemical composition rather than physical state. Hence, assertion is false.
  • Melting of wax and then solidifying is a physical change. While burning of melted wax into burnt black colour is a chemical change. Hence, reason is correct.
