The following setup is for experiment to show that co2 is produced during respiration by use of KOH. But there was no rise in the water level. This is because:
i. germinating seeds have not been kept under water in the flask.
ii. water is kept in the instead of limewater.
iii. the cork on the flask is made up of rubber.
iv. no substance is kept in the flask to absorb the gas given out by the seeds.

Answer: iv) no substance is kept in the flask to absorb the gas given out by the seeds

Explanation: Apparently, a small test tube with KOH solution should be kept in the flask with germinating seeds which absorbs the CO₂ released by the germinating seeds and creates a kind of vacuum in the flask due to which water level in the beaker rises.
